No Internet censorship despite Facebook and Twitter influence

Recently I had read an article on 12 february that says that our prime minister,Datuk Sri Najib Razak vowed not to censor the Internet but instead will engage with Malaysian when acknowledging when now people are using social networking websites such as Facebook and Twetter to express outrage or their anger on their own wall so people can read and share.

The prime minister was as to give a comment on Facebook and Twitter crucial role about this issue regarding the Egyption strongman, President Hosni Mubarak. The Egyptian Goverment had banned the micro Blogging site which is Twitter, and as a result of massive protease of anger and hatred about the government when president Mubarak refused to go down on his duties as president.

Our prime minister said that Internet is powerful and not surprisingly Because it is one of the worlds phenomenon. He added that the government has a choice weather to partake or not in the global trend or to embrace it.In fact, social networking information can be disseminated in time and does not mean it's true.

And this is my post for this week.I had explained about the effects of social networking impacted the world and also the censorship.

Internet Censorship in Vietnam

Vietnam extensively regulates Internet access to its citizens, using both legal and technical means. The collaborative project OpenNet Initiative classifies Vietnam's level of online political censorship to be 'pervasive' while Reporters without Borders considers Vietnam one of 15 'internet enemies'.

Social Networking
The popular social networking website Facebook has about 1 million users in Vietnam and its user base has been growing quickly after the website added a Vietnamese language interface. During the week of November 16, 2009, Vietnamese Facebook users reported being unable to access the website. Acess had been intermitten in the previous weeks and there were reports of technicians ordered by the goverment to block access to Facebook.

Blogging
In Vietnam , Yahoo 360 is a popular blogging service. After the government crackdown on journalists reporting on corruption in mid-2008, many blogs covered the events, often criticizing the government action. In response, the Ministry of Information proposed new rules that would restrict blogs to personal matters. Global Voices Advocacy maintains a list of bloggers who have been arrested for their views expressed online.

internet censorship in Japan

In the early 80's in Japan, the Japanese Constitution guarantees freedom of expression which prohibits formal censorship. In a way, there's an article states that censorship is a criminal code in japan.Historically the law has been interpreted to mean that all pornography must be at least partially censored.

In other words, the Japanese has a law referring to internet censorship and punishment will be given out to offenders.

The most recent trial based on this law, the first in 20 years, was the conviction of Suwa Yuuji in January 2004 for his hentai manga Misshitsu. He was originally fined 500,000 yen and avoided jail time by pleading guilty. When he appealed the case to the Supreme Court of Japan on arguments that the manga was not as indecent and explicit as much material on theInternet and that Article 175 violated the Japanese Constitution's protection of freedom of expression, the Court upheld the ruling, and fine was tripled to 1.5 million yen.
After Yuuji's conviction, a number of bookstores and chains removed their adults-only section. Their motivation has been attributed to the outcome. So this is one of the example that what will happen if someone broke the law for this particle article.

Internet Censorship In India

The Government Of India established the Computer Emergeny Respone Team ("CERT-IN") to ensure Internet security. Many institutions, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, courts, the intelligence services, the police and the National Human Rights Commission, may call on it for specialist expertise. CERT-IN's stated mission is "to enhance the security of India's Communications and Information Infrastructure through proactive action and effective collaboration".

Instances Of Censorship

The Kargil War
Immediately after the Kargil War in 1999, the website of Dawn Newspaper was blocked from access within India by Videsh Sanchar nigam Limited, a government-owned telecommunications company which at the time had monopoly control of the international internet gateways in India. Reddiff, a media news website, claimed that the ban was instigated by the Indian government, and then published detailed instructions as to how one could bypass the filter and view the site.
Future Plans
The government plans to set up a centralized mechanism at the eight landing stations for the country to block websites as and when it pleases. An agreement has already been reached with, popular social networking site, to remove "defamatory content". On the 1st of November 2007, The Economic Times reported that the Government of India was considering a ban on "posting of private and personal videos on internet and mobiles" to tackle and piracy. The Government has planned to setup national intelligence grid where it can track all call logs and internet data in real time, even though such an act would violate fundamental rights.

Internet Censorship in Australia

Internet Censorship in Australia

Internet censorship in Australia curently consists of a regulatory regime under which the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has the power to enforce content hosted within Australia, and maintain a "black list" of overseas website which is then provided for use in filtering software.

The Australian Labour Party has proposed to extend internet censorship to a system of mandatory filtering of overseas websites which are potentially would be "refused classification" (RC) in Australia.
This means that ISP are required to block access to content for all users.

A collection of both federal and state laws apply to internet content in Australia:

Suicide Related Materials.
  • Federal Parliament passed the Suicide Related Materials Offences Act, which is illegal to use communications media suah as the internet to discuss the practical aspects of suicide.
State and territory laws.
  • State goverment have laws that ban the transmission of material unsuitable for minors. Internet censorship legislation was introuced in 2001 which criminalises online material which is usuitable for minors.
The Federal Government has announced it will proceed with controversial plans to censor the internet after government commissioned trials found filtering a blacklist of banned sites was accurate and would not slow down the internet.
